The western Algarve was always more of a secret due to its location at western extremity of Portugal's southern coast, but a holiday here was only for those willing to undertake the long journey from Faro on the old 125 passing through the bustling centre of Portimao. These days it's a different story; with the new A22 motorway the travelling time has shrunk and the delightful seaside towns and villages of Portugal's western Algarve are now more easily accessible.
Western Algarve Villa Holidays - Lagos
Lagos has become one of the most popular destinations for villa with pool holidays in the Algarve amongst those in the know. Essentially now an important tourist town, Lagos still has many signs of its sea-faring history. The old town of Lagos is a superb place to while away an afternoon or indeed a fortnight, packed with wonderful restaurants and stunning architecture, both ancient and modern, and a harbour where the daily catch is still landed. The beaches at Lagos are its pride and joy - from the long golden strand of Meia Praia to the stunning coves towards the Ponta da Piedade, Praia d'Ana and Camilo - don't miss lunch at the little restaurant in the car park!
Western Algarve Villa Holidays - Luz
Just down the road from Lagos is the pretty Portuguese beach side village of Praia da Luz. Most of the villas here are within walking distance of the wonderful beach, restaurants and bars. Some are located just beyond the new Boa Vista golf course and in the rather exclusive Funchal Ridge 'Country Club' with fantastic views to the sea.
Praia da Luz was once the domain of the more intrepid holiday explorer due purely to the time involved in getting here. To help attract visitors to enjoy the wonderful beach, it added excellent sporting facilities, health clubs and spas offering beauty treatments and fitness programmes. Since the new motorway was completed, the airport in Faro is within an hour's drive, Luz has become a sophisticated and attractive resort to take a holiday. However it still retains all its Portuguese charm and the beach is magnificent. There's also a wide selection of restaurants with something to suit all tastes and budgets.
